Falcon Volleyball Wraps up Week 1 of Conference Play 1-1
The West Hills College Volleyball Team wrapped up the first week of Central Valley Conference play on Friday with a split and 1-1 record going into Week 2.
The Falcons opened the regular season with a four-set loss to College of the Sequoias on Wednesday night. The Falcons fell behind the Giants early in the first set by as many as 8 points. The Falcons quickly rebounded and soon took the lead 25-24, eventually falling 27-25 in the opener. The Falcons' momentum carried on into the second set where they jumped out to a 14-6 lead and a 25-17 win to tie up the match. "There was little doubt that both teams came to play tonight," Coach Jeff Wanderer said. "They have a lot of weapons and they brought them all tonight. We really had to be on point."
Sophomore middle hitter Mia Bouttavong-Mayberry led the Falcons with 13 Kills.
Freshman libero Felicia Reguian (San Joaquin Memorial HS) and outside hitter Fallon Alviso (Porterville HS) tallied 17 digs each while sophomore setter Isabella Galang (Strathmore HS) dished 34 assists.
Friday night featured the 0-1 Falcons travelling to Sonora to take on Columbia College (1-0). West Hills jumped out early, taking the first set 25-13. Columbia responded by taking the second set 25-15. The Falcons won the next two to close out the match.
"Columbia is a good team," Coach Wanderer said after the match. "They presented us with a lot challenges that we had a tough time dealing with."
The Falcons will be at home for both matches in Week 2. The Falcons will face Taft College on Wednesday and Merced College on Friday. Both matches start at 6PM.
