The #18 West Hills College Coalinga Volleyball Team won it's first match of the postseaon in dramatic fashion Saturday night. The Falcons travelled to Gilroy to take on #14 Gavilan College. Gavilan opened up the match with an easy first set win. The Falcons fought back in a see-saw battle where the Falcons prevailed in the next two to take a 2-1 set advantage. Gavilan regrouped to force a fifth and deciding set.
"We knew that Gavilan would come roaring back," Coach Jeff Wanderer ramerked following the match. "Gavilan has been through some tough matches and was fighting from the get go. We knew that they were not going to let us have this." Freshman Libero Felicia Ruguian agreed, "Good practice paid off. We were the underdogs tonight, we fought hard as a team and giving up was not an option for us".
The fifth set featured three lead changes in the final 10 points and a wild 19-17 win for the Falcons. "Our team has truly come so far from where we started and no expected us to get this far", commented Freshman Opposite Hitter Madisyn Baxter. "We were the underdogs and we had to work so hard toget where we are. Being a part of this team and having teammates that want to work as hard as you do and coaches who push you to be better every day is nothing less than amazing".
The Falcons faced down three match points only to eventually take the win. "It took pretty much everything we could muster", Coach Wanderer said. "Both teams did about everything they could do to win. Both teams fought like hell. It was an epic battle and there were massive contributions by everyone at times that allowed us stay in it and win".
Sophomore Setter Isabella Galang summed the match up, "I'm extrmely happy and proud of the team and what we did tonight. We all knew before the match that this was going to be teh game to prove what we couold do and we did it together. Each and everyone of us contributed to soemthing and the past week's practices were really competitive".
The Falcons advance to the next round and will face #1 Feather River College (Quincy, CA) on Tuesday Nov 26. Match time is 7 PM. Admission $12
