West Hills College Coalinga Falcons sophomore LHP Jacob Evangelo was named Northern California Co-Pitcher of the Week by the California Community College Baseball Coaches Assocation on Wednesday.
In last week's 2-1 victory at Antelope Valley College, left-hander registered 10 strikeouts and allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort.
Evangelo got off to an impressive start. He recorded two strikeouts in the first inning, forced a groundball double-play to end the second, and struckout the side in the third.
He struckout two more Lancers, both looking, in the fifth. Evangelo picked-off a runner in the seventh, and turned a double-play to end the eighth.
The sophomore ended the game in dramatic fashion. After recording his ninth strikeout, AVC's Kyle Lanthrop hit a two-out double, putting the tying run in scoring position. Evangelo responded by striking out Joe Lamont swinging for number 10 to finish the game - and sent the Falcons into a celebration around the mound.
"It was a dominating performance by Jacob," said Jason Smith, who earned his first win as WHCC head coach.
"He was ultra-competitive all the way through and was not going to be denied. He really went after it, showing a lot of leadership out there and his teammates rallied around him. It was great to see."
