Members from the West Hills College Coalinga Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), Falcon sport coaches, college counselors/advisors, administrators and support staff joined forces on Friday, Nov. 17 and completed training to become One Love facilitators.
A total of 26 participants watched the award-winning film and learned about the important One Love Foundation message.
One Love was created in memory of Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia lacrosse player who was killed by her ex-boyfriend just weeks before graduation. Today, One Loves educates and empowers young people with the information Yeardley’s family and friends did not have about what unhealthy and potentially dangerous relationship behaviors look like, empowering them to help themselves and their friends.
One Love's core tool is the Escalation Workshop, a compelling and emotionally-engaging 90-minute workshop in which the film and guided discussion leads students in recognizing relationship abuse as an issue relating to their own lives. One Love empowers them to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors and how they can step in to help a friend who is having these experiences.
WHCC athletic counselor Erin Corea will coordinate workshops with SAAC leaders to educate campus groups - including student-athletes, residence hall students, international students, and other clubs and student-body members throughout the academic year.
